Before Red went lame he used to throw his head up and down or yank the reins away when being ridden. It was usually when hacking out and he did it more on the way home, but sometimes on the way out too. I put it down to him getting tired, but when he still did it on a 1/2 hr ride, when he had had a long rein for most of it, I wondered if it was habit. Should I give the rein so he had nothing to fight against or should I block him from getting the rein??? Neither seemed to stop him from doing it.
Since coming back into work barefoot he has hardly done it at all, despite doing some longer hacks.
It appears that the discomfort in his feet was making him brace his front end resulting in his neck muscles aching.
Goes to show that even though I thought that the behaviour was caused by tired neck muscles, the reason to why they were getting tired was totally different.
